This is Spider;
Spider is a rescue cat we have no idea where her unusual name came from, she is a normal cat, fairly lazy and as you can see likes to pinch the dog's bed! Even though she has never swiped at the Molly the dog, Molly is an uber-wimp and will not push Spider out of her bed.
Like most cats now and then Spider makes half hearted attempts at chasing birds, she is too lazy and tubby to catch them but it doesn't stop her acting like the big huntress :)
This is a Red Kite;
Gorgeous aren't they? We have a few around here they have a wingspan of around 5 feet and are fairly large birds.
A couple of days ago I was sat on my sofa by the open patio doors reading whilst the cats were outside sunning themselves when all of a sudden a pair of these glorious birds came into view circling each other touching talon and wings in what appeared to be some type of mating ritual. They landed in my garden no more than 15 feet from me and right next to the trampoline which Spider was napping underneath.
My initial reaction was to grab the camera until I noticed my little cat had decided she didn't care that both of these birds were far far bigger than her or that they had sharp talons and beaks they were birds she was a cat and they had foolishly touched down close enough that she actually had a chance to catch one of them! Camera forgotten I ran out calling Spider to keep her away from her "prey" that would have hospitalised if not killed her and was thankful that my shouting was enough to make her pause and the birds fly.
It would have been wonderful to get some photo's so close of these beautiful birds but it is much more so to have my lovely cat un-harmed even if she is now swaggering around and acting like even more of a queen :)
This is my tale for Storytelling Sunday pop along to Sian's blog and have a look at the others and join in the fun :)
Oh yes the self assuredness of cats - what a great story. And how amazing to have the red kites in your garden - I've only seen them at the conservation centre
ReplyDeleteyou are so lucky having those gorgeous birds near you, so glad Spider is still with you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cats tail! The pictures of the red kites are beautiful. TFS
ReplyDeleteGosh, what a heart stopping moment! It's great to get a story like this recorded, isn't it? I'll be looking out to see when it appears in your storytelling filing system :) Thanks for joining in again this month Michelle
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you were there to stop her from getting hurt. Don't you love how cats think they are invincible.
ReplyDeleteah yes the stupidity of the cat at times. willow or no brainer has had the odd scrabble with the wild animal most notably we think a badger which chewed half her face off. £1000.00 worse off my parents said she was to stay inside............sadly she does not agree but has not played with badgers since,

You've got to love domestic cats who think they are mighty hunters!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant story, but are you sure she wasn't just getting you to scare away the big monster birds? Cats are pretty canny
ReplyDeletegreat story - reminds me of Lil Miss, hmm might have to go dig out some photos to tell that one too!
ReplyDeleteoh, lucky you to be able to see two of these beauties so close up!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, how lucky you were there to save him and at least you got o see these stunning birds
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity to see some of those birds up close! But I'm glad Spider thought better of it :D
ReplyDeleteWe also have cats that think they are queens... and fancy themselves to be mousers... although I'm sure they wouldn't know what to do with one if they caught it! Glad you got out in time to save Spider from her own delusions of grandeur!
ReplyDeleteOh my, so good you were close by. Isn't it funny how animals sometimes don't take into account that other animals are much larger. My Mama has a little dog that will chase any other dog, no matter how big it is!
ReplyDeletewow, i didnt realise how big they were, good job you forwent the camera hun xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog...so glad you were able to get to Spider on time!
